Hammered Penannular Shawl Pin
Penannular pins (or brooches), also called Celtic brooches, are clothes fasteners commonly associated with the beginning of the Early Medieval period (approximately 5th century-10th century) in Ireland and Britain. Penannular means forming an incomplete circle. These brooches can range from simply- designed to ornate works of art with gemstones and multiple metals.
This pin is what I call ‘classic simplicity’. It’s an uncomplicated design with a hammered finish that has been oxidized to highlight the texture. The brooch ends are flared and the stick end is softly rounded. This pin is about 3.25” in diameter and formed from a substantial piece of sterling silver wire. It’s got some heft to it—use with your heavier weight shawls and scarves!
